What should you wear in an infrared sauna?
Short answer
Wear as little as you are comfortable in: a swimsuit, loose cotton shorts and a sports bra, or just a towel. Infrared works by reaching your skin, so bare skin and light natural fabrics get the most out of the session. Leave jewelry, watches, lotion and tight synthetic workout gear outside the cabin.
The best things to wear
- A swimsuit. Easy, quick-drying, and ready for the shower and cold plunge after.
- Loose cotton shorts and a tank or sports bra. Cotton breathes and soaks up sweat.
- Just a towel. In a private cabin, this is the most common choice and the most effective, because nothing blocks the light.
- Bare feet. Flip-flops to the door, then off.
What to leave in the locker
- Jewelry, watches, rings and piercings you can remove. Metal heats up fast and can get uncomfortably hot against the skin.
- Glasses and contacts if they bother you in heat; most people are fine with contacts for 30 minutes.
- Lotion, oils, makeup and perfume. They sit on the skin, block sweat and can feel sticky under heat. Come clean, moisturize after.
- Tight synthetic gear: compression tights, polyester leggings, sports tops that trap heat. They hold sweat against you and blunt the infrared.
- Your phone, if you can bear it. Heat is hard on batteries and the session is better without it.
What to bring
- Water. Drink a full glass before and bring a bottle in. You will sweat more than you expect.
- A second towel to sit on and one to dry off. We supply towels; bring your own if you prefer.
- A hair tie. Hair up keeps your neck cool and your towel dry.
- A change of clothes if you are heading out afterward. Loose and comfortable; your skin keeps sweating for a few minutes.
After the session
Sit for two or three minutes before standing, rinse or wipe down, and put on dry clothes. If you booked the cold plunge, take a quick rinse and head to the tub while you are still warm.

Your first infrared sauna: how long, what to wear, what to do after
Plan on 20 to 30 minutes, wear a swimsuit, shorts or just a towel, and drink a big glass of water before and after. Afterward, cool down slowly, rinse, and rehydrate. Booked the cold plunge too? Rinse off first, then head to the tub.

Infrared sauna vs traditional sauna: which should you book?
A traditional sauna heats the air to 170 to 200°F and you absorb heat from it. An infrared sauna uses light to warm your body directly at a gentler 120 to 150°F, so you can stay longer and sweat just as much. Both are good for you; infrared is easier for most people to actually enjoy for 30 minutes.

How to cold plunge for the first time
Breathe slowly before you get in, enter in one steady motion, and spend the first 30 seconds exhaling longer than you inhale. Aim for one to two minutes, then warm up naturally. At Revive a coach does all of this with you, step by step.
